What sets a successful creator apart

In the Scout Program every scout has a minimum bar for recruiting — 500+ followers, business account, activity in the last 30 days. That's 'can I recruit them at all'. But between 'can' and 'will activate in the first 30 days' there's a big gap. Stage 1 is learning to tell one from the other before spending DMs on the irrelevant.
The mandatory checklist
500+ Instagram followers — public, not private. Business account — a personal profile won't allow the needed API connection. Activity in 30 days — at least 1 post; zombie accounts won't pass registration. If even one item isn't met, don't spend a DM — the creator won't register even if they agree.
Positive signals — likely to activate
A clear niche from the five targets (fashion, beauty, lifestyle, tech, food), not 'a bit of everything'. Regular product or lifestyle content in the last month, not just selfies. Engagement vs followers: for nano (500–10K) a 5–10%+ ratio is normal, for micro (10–100K) 3–5%+ — this matters more than the absolute follower count. The bio already mentions shopping or recommendations — the creator gets the game. The business account is genuinely set up, not just toggled for show.
Negative signals — probably won't take
Suspicious follower growth (1K to 50K in a week — bought). Only personal/lifestyle content with no commerce intent. Activity of 1 post a month with emptiness in between. A politician's, religious leader's or media-personality's account — off-niche and often against compliance. DMs closed, or 'I don't promote products' in the bio.
Where scouts cut themselves the most
Experienced scouts spend 60 seconds on a profile before writing a DM. Beginners write to everyone and then wonder about a 2% reply rate. The quality of the short-list beats its size.
Key takeaway: The minimum is 'can'. Positive signals are 'will probably take'. Negatives are 'don't waste time'. 60 seconds qualifying a profile saves 10 minutes on a DM no one will read.
Next step: Take 10 creators you plan to message this week. Run 60 seconds on each — the mandatory checklist plus positive and negative signals. The ones who pass go into the DM funnel.
